On the 31st day John is left with no cigarettes, but the remains from the previous days will let him make 10 more. On the 41st day John could make the next 3 cigarettes, finally on the 44th he will smoke his last self-made one. Now the question is: does the ship come on the 45th day ("A ship on the horizon!"), or after 45 days on the 46th from the beginning of the Smoking Odyssey.

Agree with Andrey. He'd be OK if it was an after-dinner smoke but not if it were a first-thing in the morning thing!

30 cigarettes give 30 stubs so that makes an extra 10 cigarettes. This gets us to day 40. The 10 stubs give 3 cigarettes so get us to day 43. The 3 stubs give 1 cigarette and get us to day 44. The ship arrived day 45 and as long as John can wait he will get new cigarettes that day.

Yes. Apart from the mathematical answers given above, the question was "can John make it until the supply ship arrives?". Given that he was smoking 1 per day, I'd say he's not a heavy smoker - so he's not exactly going to die if he goes cold turkey and gives up smoking completely. So, regardless of the math, yeah, he'll make it.
